Council Meeting Minutes – October 19, 2017
Present: Rev. Steve Gordon, Nancy Rice, Steve Bjordahl, Mary Helgeson, Betty Ranney, Kim Harris, Darryl Gehring, Ann Hall, John Hauck, and Sally Phillips. Nancy opened the meeting and Rev. Steve gave an opening prayer.
Consent Agenda and Old Business: The September minutes were approved as presented. John gave the Treasurer’s report, noting that the payroll is now being handled by automatic deposit. Apostles Build will be a separate line item. The calendars were updated; Log deadlines are 10/20, 11/24, and 12/22. Council agreed to skip the Quarterly Meeting this fall. Ann discussed the coffee hour schedule; committee chairs are to ask their members for suggestions and how to involve other people as servers. Rev. Steve reported on the Kurdish family’s situation: the parents have their papers and social security. The steering committee for serving this family will be encouraging more donations and a specific report will be made to council every month.
New Business: Core Ministry Reports – Stewardship: Mary noted that the campaign is progressing and will culminate with a cobb salad lunch on 11/5. Worship: Betty said that World Communion Sunday was special with five international breads. They will welcome new members on 11/19. Welcome Aboard sub-committee needs more greeters; she will note that on the new volunteer bulletin board. Christian Education: Nancy announced the Soup and Salad luncheon and Carnival on 10/29; proceeds to go to the Youth mission trip. Also on 10/29 is “Pack the Church in Pink” – attendees should wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness. Youth: Kim is also working on the luncheon and carnival. She is meeting with parents of youth planning to attend the mission trip to Hawaii at the end of June. The younger youth are relating to residents at West Park Village for outreach. She still needs volunteers to supply Wednesday night dinners. Mission & Outreach: Darryl said the KIVA project is going well and our loans are being paid back. Julie Gordon is managing this and has put up an informative bulletin board in the hallway. Sign-up sheets are available in the narthex for Apostles Build work days. Resource & Operations: Steve said the doors and windows in the Fellowship Hall will be installed soon. New financial systems are being learned and online giving is being set up. Women of Mayflower: Ann announced the next meeting, 10/25, will feature Ann Hanson speaking about Our Whole Lives. The bazaar will be held on 12/2.
Pastor’s Report: Rev. Steve mentioned a new UCC program, “Three Loves” (neighbor, children and creation) which he will introduce during the sermon this Sunday.
Nancy adjourned the meeting; Rev. Steve led in the closing prayer.
